After ‘worst recession’ in Malaysia’s history, strong economic recovery expected in 2021, Fitch’s research unit predicts

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Malaysia economic recovery in the second half of this year is expected to be gradual before bouncing back on its feet next year, having experienced its “worst recession” recently, the Fitch Group’s research unit said.

Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research was explaining why it had decided to revise its forecast of real GDP or economic growth for Malaysia at -4.5 percent for 2020, down from the previous figures of -2.8 percent. It also revised its 2021 forecast for Malaysia’s real GDP from the previous 5.7 percent to a more positive 6.3 percent.

Key reasons for the Fitch research unit’s revision of the 2020 figures include the 17.1 percent contraction of Malaysia’s real GDP in the second quarter of 2020 or from April to June as compared to the year before due to movement control order (MCO) measures, which the unit described as the “worst contraction in Malaysia’s history”.

It also said the -4.5 percent outlook for Malaysia’s real GDP is due to forecasted weaker domestic and external demand in the second half of 2020 in line with expected continued restrictions on travel and movement.

 Malaysia is second in Covid-19 fight success

MALAYSIA has been ranked the second most successful country in the fight against Covid-19 after Taiwan, China Press reported.

A Japanese think tank recently released an evaluation report on the response of 49 major countries in dealing with the virus and Malaysia came in second with a combined score of 144.

Taiwan scored 180 points out of 200 in the assessment of two criteria – pandemic damage and economic damage due to Covid-19.

Hong Kong was ranked third with 143 points, followed by Thailand (126), China and South Korea (124), Australia (120), New Zealand (99), Japan (95) and Norway (90).

The United States, which has attracted much attention due to its high positive cases, ranked 41st with 24 points, while the United Kingdom with 23 points was ranked 43rd.

Peru’s overall 10 points placed it at the bottom of the list.

The report said that South-East Asian countries enjoyed higher rankings because they were alert to the development of the “unidentified pneumonia” earlier and implemented travel control early, which has the greatest effect.

The report noted that the development of pandemic damage and economic damage was largely related to how each country responded.

World Health Organization of United Nation reported that Alcohol kills one person every 10 seconds world wide or 3.3 million people every year or 5.9% of global death, comparing to HIV/ADI .28%, tuberculosis 1.7%, and violent which is just 0.9%. [WHO Study 2012].

The implementation of Islamic law or Shariah law which strictly provident the consumption of alchol, certainly could save taw world for this human catastrophe. 

 MALAYSIA A NATION OF DISTINCTION WITH EXCELLENT GROWTH IN 2021

World Bank reported that Malaysia is more resilient than many countries worldwide. International Monetary Fund [IMF] projected that Malaysia's GDP to grow 9%, fastest among ASEAN countries. Many nations showed great interest in Malaysia success in battling COVID-19 as well as its excellent Economic Stimulus Program.

2020, July 5.  Malaysia's success in battling the COVID-19, attracting many other nations to learn Malaysian experiences. It is astonishing that its closest neighbor Singapore with a small population of merely 5 million experiencing more than 52, 000 confirmed cases as compared to Malaysia, a population of more than 30 million, having less than 9000 confirmed cases.
