Islamic TV station in England fined for inciting violence

CANTERBURY, England (RNS) Britain’s broadcasting watchdog has fined an Islamic TV channel 85,000 pounds  ($132,490) for inciting violence after a program host said it was acceptable, and even a duty, for Muslims to murder anyone who insults the Prophet Muhammad.

In a statement, the regulator known as Ofcom (short for Office of Communications) said the fine was imposed due to the serious nature of statements made by a presenter on May 3 last year.

Noor TV broadcasts in English, Urdu and Punjabi. It is based in Birmingham and owned by Al Ehya Digital Television, which broadcasts both in the U.K. and internationally on Sky TV. The station’s mission is to “present a balanced, moderate and true face of Islam to both Muslims and non-Muslim communities across the globe.”

Birmingham is England’s second-largest city, and census figures show approximately 14.3 percent of the population is Muslim. Thousands of young Muslims watch Noor TV.
On the program in question, “Paigham-e-Mustafa,” which means “Message from Mustafa,” presenter Allama Muhammad Farooq Nizami answered questions from viewers about a wide range of issues relating to Islam.

One caller asked in Urdu what punishment was due for anyone showing disrespect to the Prophet Muhammad.

Sitting alone in the studio, Nizami looked straight into the camera and replied: “One has to choose one’s own method. Our way is the peaceful way but when someone crosses the limits, faith-based emotions are instigated. The mission of our life is to protect the sanctity of our beloved Lord. May Allah accept us wherever there is a need to kill a blasphemer. We are ready, and should be ready at all times, to kill a blasphemer.”

Immediately, several viewers contacted Ofcom and complained.
In addition to imposing a fine, Ofcom ordered the TV station not to repeat the segment and to broadcast a statement of its findings.

Al Ehya Digital fired Nizami in May this year for promoting personal political opinions and supporting a violent act.

In its statement, Ofcom said Al Ehya Digital has not yet broadcast an apology or condemnation of Nizami’s remarks and appears not to have recognized the gravity of the comments made by Nizami.
But despite this, the regulator levied Al Ehya Digital a fraction of the 250,000 pounds ($389,677) it could have been fined because it wished to protect the station’s right to “freedom of expression.”
A spokesman for Al Ehya Digital was unavailable for comment.

Last December, Radio Asian Fever, in Leeds was fined 4,000 pounds ($6,235) for breaching broadcasting rules involving a presenter called “Sister Ruby Ramadan.”
She told listeners that homosexuals should be beaten and tortured

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak today launched the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) Islamic City, which is set to reflect the university’s success qualities on a multi-faceted scale.
The prime minister said the Islamic City, with its unique design and functions, would propel the university to be among the global league of premier universities in the 21st century.
“I believe the Islamic City will boost the IIUM efforts to become the central player in recapturing the historical and central role that Islam had once played in all fields of knowledge to benefit all of mankind.
“This city will bear witness to the progress of Malaysia as a modern state that truthfully embodies the values of moderate Islam,” he said at the launch of the Islamic City in conjunction with IIUM’s 30th anniversary at its Gombak Campus, near here.
Also present were IIUM president and advisor to the government on social and cultural affairs, Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim, and IIUM rector Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin.
The Islamic City, to be built on 7.1 hectares at an estimated cost of RM800 million, would comprise an Islamic Centre, a medical centre, serviced apartments, a convention centre, a hotel, a shopping mall and a food court.
The project, which would use water as its underlying concept, was expected to be fully completed within five to seven years.
Najib said that with the implementation of the contemporary findings of modern architecture through the model of Madinah Al-Munawarah, Damascus, Baghdad and Cordoba, the prism of the Islamic civilisation model would allow the Islamic City to be set as a new benchmark for excellence in Islamic architecture.
The prime minister noted that the innovative city would be built on the basis of endowment, which would provide for government funds to be saved for the new requirements of IIUM to achieve research university status.
“The Islamic City will be a commercial hub for IIUM and I hope that many will generously contribute towards making this project a success,” he said.

 islamic phone for web_1.jpg

The soon-to-be-launched “Peace Mobile,” an Islamic smartphone, is a useful media gadget that reconciles Qur’an with modern science.

The smartphone was invented by Dr. Zakir Naik, an internationally renowned public speaker on Islam and comparative religion, and is ready to be launched internationally in the last week of Ramadan.

Demand for the Islamic handset is scaling among Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Thousands of people have already ordered the gadget online, while hundreds are talking about it on various media platforms.

A breakthrough technological initiative by Naik, founder and president of the IRF (Islamic Research Foundation), the phone will facilitate the implementation of Islamic ethos in daily life. Peace Mobile is completely customized with authentic Islamic apps and software and helps practicing Muslims stay connected with the Islamic world.

Naik was in Riyadh recently speaking at a Ramadan forum organized by the IICC (India Islamic Cultural Center), where he urged knowledge and unity.
The Islamic scholar has always stressed the need for both religious education and modern education, considering both as essential.

The Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) is a nonprofit organization that owns the Peace TV channel, a major Islamic satellite television network that recently exceeded a record global viewership of 200 million.

Featuring over 80 hours of Naik’s videos, 50 Islamic applications, hundreds of Islamic wallpaper and 200 Islamic ringtones, the phone contains numerous books on Islam and comparative religion written by Naik, apart from other Islamic programs. Okasha Mujahid, international business manager at Darussalam, a Riyadh-based Islamic publishing house, welcomed the smartphone and said, “Darussalam has earnestly worked to spread the word of Islam through its publications. Peace Mobile can help become an extension for this.”

“People will be able to experience the difference, as communicating through technology will make life easy and convenient par excellence while fostering an intimate relationship with the Creator,” read an official statement by the IRF.

Competing with the most prominent of smartphones, Peace Mobile is equipped with advanced specifications in a stylish design, including a 4.6-inch screen, capacitive multi-touchscreen tablet, a dual 32-GB SD SIM card and 4-GB internal memory dual core processor, 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, in addition to Android Gingerbread 2.3.5 OS, upgradeable to Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.

The IRF has officially announced that the dispatch of the mobile phones will start by the last week of Ramadan. The handsets will be available worldwide from UAE through online purchase and delivery will be completed via DHL or FedEx. The handset is priced at $240, equivalent to SR901 and AED882.
